nobody (3:56)

emily swam out past the breakers

emily left her lies behind

over and round the broken wreckage

of the sunken shoreline

above her the moon was shining heavy

below her the bottom dropped away

behind her she heard the first explosion

in the court house by the bay

her uniform was on the ground

she left it purple, gray, and muddy

they would assume that she had drowned

after all she was nobody

wouldn’t they know what she had done?

wouldn’t they curse her phony name

didn’t she worry didn't care

they had themselves to blame

emily swam away from anger

emily swam away from pain

emily swam away from fire

when the explosions began to wane

her uniform was on the ground

she left it purple, gray, and muddy

they would assume that she had drowned

after all she was nobody

emily swam
